From the recording Hang Ten My Friend

I attended my first SongTown writers retreat in the spring of 2015 and magically was paired up with Pro writer Danny Myrick, a brilliant and extremely gifted Nashville songwriter. He asked what did I want to write so I opened up my little song file on my phone and said a surfing song. I had earlier pitched the idea to another pro writer who wasn't feeling it, but Danny's eyes lit up and as fast as I could blurt out the idea for the song and some lyrics, he was off and running. I mean, this guy can write the pants off of anything. We wrote it in about an hour and it's still one of most favorite songs I've written. This song was pitched for Kenny Chesney's new album, but it didn't get cut...yet...

HANG TEN MY FRIEND

Tiny beachside tiki barAn old gray beard talking scarsPointing at a surfboard in the sand Paint-spattered old jukeboxNothin' but Marley, it never stopsBikini girls in search of a perfect tanI listened as he talked about flying and falling and Jesus and waterSmiling as he said…(Chorus)
When you finally catch the wave you want you better ride itEven if the tide gets a little too rough, don't fight it.Just lose yourself out on that boardSee what the ocean has in storeOpen your mind find your peace withinHang ten my friendWell I rolled my eyes took another sipThought that dude's one helluva tripBut I guess it takes all kinds of kindsThe more I heard the more I thought maybeHe might not be sun-baked crazyAnd maybe there's some treasure for me to findSo I ordered one more beer just so I could sit and hearHis gospel of the surfboard one more time(Repeat Chorus)
(Solo)
(Bridge)Just got the word he's goneSat down and wrote this songA little truth to pass along (Repeat Chorus)May the thrill never endHang ten my friend
